A wave/Suddenly/Instantly of panic/anxiety/desperation washed over me. I had forgotten/misplaced/lost the spare, and the thought of spending/being forced to/having to a long/freezing/dreadful night outside was unthinkable/terrifying/horrible.

Sweat beads formed on my forehead. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a frantic drummer. I stared at the locked/closed/secured car door, its cold metal mocking my predicament. That's just great/fantastic/awesome, right? I can't believe/recall/imagine how this happened.
